GSK Announces Plans for New Global R&D Centre in Cambridge, UK

GSK plc has unveiled plans to establish a significant new global Research and Development (R&D) center in Cambridge, UK. This initiative is part of GSK's strategy to expedite its R&D pipeline. The state-of-the-art, 300,000 square foot facility will be located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, a central hub in the UK’s renowned life sciences “Golden Triangle.” This new site will host over 1,000 GSK scientists and serve as the core of GSK’s R&D operations in the UK.

The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is among the largest biomedical campuses in Europe, offering GSK scientists unparalleled access to an exceptional ecosystem of biomedical research, patient care, and academic resources. This environment promotes translational research by connecting laboratory science directly with clinical practice.

The cutting-edge facility will support GSK's research in critical areas such as Oncology, Respiratory, Hepatology, Vaccines, and HIV, through advanced tech-enabled labs and infrastructure.

Home to more than 22,000 life sciences professionals and visited by over 37,000 individuals daily, the Cambridge Biomedical Campus treats over 1 million patients annually. It houses more than 470 biopharma, biotech, and AI companies, including many of GSK’s existing partners and collaborations. These partnerships include the Cambridge Centre for Data-Driven Discovery, Cambridge-GSK Translational Immunology Collaboration, and the GSK Clinical Unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Commenting on the announcement, Luke Miels, CEO of GSK, stated, “This investment will speed up our R&D efforts and aid in delivering competitive new products. It further integrates GSK into one of the world’s premier centers of knowledge, highlighting the UK's life sciences ecosystem's appeal.”

The campus facilitates exceptional collaborative opportunities, and this move will act as a catalyst for bold and rapid medicine discovery.”

The development of the Cambridge site, led by Prologis, is part of GSK's broader UK network of collaborations with leading academic institutions and pioneering scientific organizations.

As part of this strategic shift, GSK plans to vacate its R&D site in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, with a phased employee relocation by 2029. Additionally, GSK will enhance its existing R&D labs in Ware, Hertfordshire, to create a fully integrated drug development and commercial manufacturing capability. The company intends to invest £400 million over three years to support these changes.

GSK’s global headquarters will remain in London, unaffected. The company invests over £6 billion in R&D annually, with more than £1.5 billion invested in the UK.
